FINDING AN ENGINEERING OPENING IS IMPOSSIBLE
I'm not kidding or exaggerating. Our office has worked Detroit placing Engineers for 24 years and I don't want to gloss over the seriousness of this.
The vast majority of openings you find on the internet right now are mostly "back-filling" for people who left a mediocre company.
The buck stops with me at this Recruiting Firm and we WILL NOT work with companies that are troubled. We have our methods of vetting this.
And you should too. This is something you will discover in the interview process.
WHAT YOU WITNESS IN THE INTERVIEW IS WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT WORKING THERE.
During an interview, scope out the environment. Look for organization versus sloppiness. Take a hard observation of the other employees who are working. Do you see happy people, people invested in their work, or do you see boredom and sadness?
Did they take you on an extensive tour? Did they show you the entire R&D operation and a plant tour? Does the lobby have an elaborate receptionist station and is there nothing there but a phone with a paper list of contacts?
Are they showing you their products and assemblies and the stages of development?
Are they PROUD of their operation? Are you sensing this?
Try to avoid making assumptions of what you'll be doing there and create 5 bullet points of the most important things you'll be doing weekly. When you walk out of there, you should have a complete list.
Technical companies around Detroit have clearly leaned out and the tariffs have caused many of them to tighten their budgets. If you are clearly heading in a good direction in the interview process, one of the last questions to the HIRING MANAGER should address how the company handles their PERFORMANCE REVIEWS and the timing of these.
I have far too many people who are offering feedback of non-existent performance reviews, toxic workplaces, and describing wavering companies that have no plan for success.
Good Luck! Steve
